Alfalfa Establishment Alternatives
By David W. Koch, Larry S. Hicks, and Alan M. Gray

In Wyoming, alfalfa is grown primarily for hay under irrigation, but it also is grown on dryland and for pasture. Alfalfa is a versatile crop that can be rotated with other crops and grown on non-cropland meadows.

Alfalfa Establishment Alternatives is a 10-page bulletin that describes alternatives to traditional alfalfa establishment on cropland and non-cropland sites. Good stands are essential to realize alfalfa’s potential profitability. Stand failures are more costly than other crops because of out-of-pocket re-establishment costs and forage productions lost when less-than-optimum stands are maintained.

The authors explain, “The information we are presenting is intended to facilitate planning and to improve chances for successful alfalfa seeding.”
