Extending the grazing season with turnips and other brassicas
By David W. Koch and Aziz Karakaya

One way to reduce the cost of livestock production is to utilize forages that complement native species. Grazing is a more efficient and economic alternative to feeding hay if forage quantity and quality are sufficient.

Extending the grazing season with turnips and other brassicas discusses the characteristics, species, and nutritional content of these short-season crops. This 12-page bulletin describes methods of producing and using turnips and other brassicas.

According to the authors, "With proper management and when grown as a second crop, short season crops provide relatively inexpensive forage for high-performance livestock, reducing the need for feeding hay or supplement."
