UW sponsors small-acreage workshop in Sheridan
Information to help new-to-the-land small-acreage owners manage their resources will be offered during a hands-on workshop Saturday, April 28, in Sheridan.
The workshop is 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with a morning session at the Sheridan College Watt Regional Agricultural Center and an afternoon session at the University of Wyoming’s Sheridan Research and Extension (R&E) Center at 663 Wyarno Road. A free lunch will be provided at the center. Pre-registration is requested by April 20 by calling the center at (307) 737-2415 or via e-mail Britni Haar at bhaar@uwyo.edu.
Information ranges from grass growth and management to windbreaks, septic system planning, Wyoming water rights, weed control and chemical sprayer calibration. The schedule and a map to the center are available online at http://uwadmnweb.uwyo.edu/uwexpstn/Sheridan.asp.
The agenda was organized after contacting the Sheridan County University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service office and the Sheridan R&E Center advisory board for input.
“We talked about what we thought small-acreage owners might want to see, especially new small-acreage owners,” said Wendy Owen, a researcher at the Sheridan R&E Center. “What makes the workshop attractive is the wide variety of subjects. All are being presented by experts, people who have a lot of experience in what they are talking about.”
Owen said information will also be provided for the experienced landowner.
Sessions at Sheridan College include grass growth and grazing management, windbreaks and tree management, landscaping for wildlife attraction, and water quality: septic system planning. Sessions at the R&E center include weed identification, small-acreage weed control (field session), turf grass management (field session), hands-on chemical sprayer calibration, hands-on pasture grass identification and hands-on small-acreage equipment training.
Presenters will also cover new technology or new programs available to landowners.
