Championships, money up for grabs at beef expo in Riverton
Youths, adults and their entries are aspiring to be champions and vie for more than $3,700 at the Fifth Annual Mountain States Beef Expo Saturday and Sunday March 11-12 in Riverton.
The event, this year being held at the Central Wyoming College Equine Center, will have more than 75 head of cattle shown each day with a heifer show, a steer show and a jackpot showmanship contest.
Anyone over age 8 can compete. The show is open to the public.
“The show provides an opportunity to work with your cattle, to show off some of your cattle’s genetics and have a good time in meeting other kids from other states,” said Alex Malcolm, University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service (CES) 4-H/youth educator in Fremont County.
Past participants have been from Montana, Colorado and Wyoming. “The quality of livestock will be tremendous,” said Malcolm. “More than likely you will see county and state winners at this show.”
Each day, the grand champion steer will be awarded $1,000, the reserve champion steer $250, the grand champion heifer $500, and the reserve champion heifer $100.
Events start with cattle weigh-in and hip height at 8 a.m. the first day and at 7 a.m. the second day. An entry fee of $25 per head will be taken during check-in.
The center has a heated indoor arena and wash racks.
Local producers, FFA teachers and the CES initiated the show. “I think it’s an awesome opportunity for youths and participants to look at different cattle across the nation and see where their livestock fits in amidst that competition,” said Malcolm.
Each year, Wells Fargo Bank awards a $1,000 scholarship to a Wyoming student participating in the expo who is a graduating senior and who plans to attend a junior college or university. Applications will be available at the expo.
