Regional tree conference March 31 in Torrington
Selecting trees for the urban landscape, how to assess the health of trees, the importance of maintaining good soil and how to properly plant and care for trees are among the topics of a regional tree conference Saturday, March 31, in Torrington.
The conference is 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Eastern Wyoming College’s (EWC) Tebbett Building, rooms 131 and 132.
Registration is 8-8:45 a.m. The fee is $10, which includes lunch.
Wayne Tatman, University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service (UW CES) educator for Goshen, Platte and Laramie counties, will give opening and closing remarks.
Sponsors include EWC, Grassroots Garden Club, UW CES Goshen County Master Gardeners and Wyoming State Forestry Division.
Presentations include:
9 a.m., fruit trees for the urban landscape – how to select and propagate the right ones, Scott Skogerboe, propagator at the Fort Collins Wholesale Nursery in Fort Collins, Colo.
10 a.m., the soil food web and healthy trees, Ron Miller, president of Whole Farm, Environmental Living Energy Systems Inc., Scottsbluff, Neb.
11 a.m., “‘Arboricide’ Crime Scene Investigation,” identifying samples of trees damaged by insects and diseases and from environmental conditions and nutritional deficiencies, Doak Nickerson, district forester, Nebraska Forest Service, an affiliate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Scottsbluff, Neb.
1 p.m., identification and evaluation of trees on the EWC campus, Skogerboe, Miller, Nickerson and Mark Hughes, urban and community forestry coordinator for the Wyoming State Forestry Division.
2 p.m., selecting suitable trees for the urban landscape, Hughes.
3 p.m., visit with the speakers on an individual or small-group basis.
3:50 p.m., closing remarks.
