UW workshop offers ways to develop rangeland management program

A program to help landowners develop and implement a simple rangeland management program and identify plants is 1-3 p.m. Thursday, June 22, at the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Extension Center (SAREC) near Lingle.

The program is sponsored by the University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service (UW CES).

“Monitoring has proven useful for producers involved with public land use disputes and will also prove useful in potential private land disputes,” said Dallas Mount, UW CES educator for Platte, Goshen and Laramie counties.

A monitoring program includes development of a defendable database of impacts of one’s management and provides landowners information for management decisions.

“Producers who have implemented a rangeland monitoring program consistently comment on the value of this program,” said Mount. “Rangeland monitoring is another tool for producers to use to manage by, and it also provides the added benefit of providing them with a solid database of the impact of their management on the land.”

Mount, along with Mike Smith, range extension specialist and professor in the UW College of Agriculture’s Department of Renewable Resources, are the presenters.
