Hot Springs County resource tour June 21

Weed and mosquito control, grazing management and the removal of two problematic tree species in the Big Horn Basin are among topics of a resource tour Wednesday, June 21, in Hot Springs County.

The free tour begins at 8 a.m. at the Hot Springs County Fair Building.

Hosting the event are the University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service (UW CES), Hot Springs County Weed and Pest Control District, Hot Springs Conservation District, Wyoming Department of Agriculture and federal Natural Resources Conservation Service.

The guest speaker is Russell Nemetz, ag director of the Billings, Mont.-based Northern Broadcasting System, which delivers nearly 200 radio programs each week to listeners in nine western states, including Wyoming, and parts of Canada.

Participants will tour several sites to hear about control of mosquitos and noxious weeds (including Russian knapweed), grazing management, and Russian olive and tamarisk (saltcedar) removal, and view a wetlands project and a coordinated resource management area.

The tour is scheduled to last until late afternoon. Lunch will be provided.

Persons are asked to register by 5 p.m. Friday, June 16, by calling Crystal Bangerter with the Hot Springs County UW CES office at (307) 864-3421 or Carol Smith with the Hot Springs County Weed and Pest Control District at (307) 864-2278.
