UW plans horse nutrition workshops in Meeteetse, Cody

Meeting a horse’s nutritional needs is the topic of May workshops in Meeteetse and Cody hosted by the University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service (UW CES).

Jim Waggoner, specializing in livestock management and nutrition in the Department of Renewable Resources at the University of Wyoming, will present “Better Understanding the Nutritional Needs of Your Horse” Tuesday, May 15, in Meeteetse, and at two programs Wednesday, May 16, in Cody.

“We will provide information to horse owners about feeds and management that will help them do a better job of feeding and managing their horses and thus have more fun with them,” said Waggoner, an associate professor in the College of Agriculture.

            The schedule is:

Meeteetse – 7 p.m. May 15, Lucille’s Ferret Den, 1906 State St. Waggoner will be joined by veterinarian Dr. Bill Gould with Gould Veterinary Clinic, Meeteetse, and Tom Hiser of Fort Dodge Animal Health, a division of Wyeth, a manufacturer and distributor of animal health care products for the livestock, swine, poultry, equine and companion animal industries in the United States and international markets

Cody – 10 a.m., May 16, at the Barling Room, Park County Courthouse, and 6:30 p.m. in the community room of Big Horn Federal Savings Bank, 1701 Stampede Ave.

Topics to be discussed include feeds and feed types, feed quality, the horse’s unique digestive system, the importance of water in maintaining a healthy and useful animal and the effects of animal age and performance.
