Drought management workshop for producers Aug. 10 in Douglas
Early weaning as a tool to reduce feed needs and tax implications of selling stock due to drought are among items scheduled for a drought management workshop for livestock producers 1:30-4:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, in Douglas.
The meeting is sponsored by the University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service (UW CES) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Risk Management Agency.
The workshop is in the Converse County Courthouse meeting room.
“Livestock producers are facing some pretty serious decisions, and we are hoping to give them the information they need concerning this drought,” said Tammie Jensen, who is facilitating the meeting with Ryan Rapp. Both are CES educators for Converse, Natrona, and Niobrara counties.
Harlan Hughes, professor emeritus at North Dakota State University, will discuss economic evaluations of drought management strategies. Steve Paisley, CES beef specialist and Department of Animal Science professor in the UW College of Agriculture, will speak about early weaning as a tool to reduce feed requirements. The tax implications of livestock sales due to drought will be examined by Alan Schroeder, CES agriculture law specialist. Dallas Mount, CES educator for Platte, Goshen, and Laramie counties, will provide an overview of drought alternatives and the impact of drought on rangelands.
The UW CES has also compiled helpful information available at a drought information Web page. The address is http://www.uwyo.edu/UWCES/Drought.asp
“Producers are facing difficult decisions in regard to their livestock operations and management of their rangeland as a result of this drought,” said Jensen. “Hopefully, this session can provide some helpful information and provide alternatives to help alleviate some of the concerns associated with the lack of grass, hay and feed.”
The meeting is free, and no preregistration is required. For more information, contact Jensen at (307) 334-3534 or trjensen@uwyo.edu or Rapp at (307) 358-2417 or rappr@uwyo.edu.
