UW bulletin describes proper tree, shrub fertilization
When to fertilize trees and shrubs, what fertilizer to use and how much are described in a new bulletin available from the University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service (UW CES)
Landscaping: Fertilizing Trees and Shrubs, B-1172, also includes how to determine if fertilizer is needed. The bulletin was written by Karen Panter, CES horticulture specialist in the College of Agriculture’s Department of Plant Sciences, Kelli Belden, CES soils research associate in the Department of Renewable Resources, and Mark Hughes, community forestry coordinator, Wyoming State Forestry Division.
“Fertilizer application can improve tree and shrub growth and can help them tolerate stresses like winter damage, drought, or pests but only if the elements applied are lacking in the soil,” Panter said.
“Fertilizer is not a miracle cure and can actually burn roots and foliage if applied too heavily. If applied at the wrong time, fertilizer may encourage the growth of tender tissues that are prone to injury.”
The bulletin is available free at http://ces.uwyo.edu/PUBS/B1172.pdf. Copies for $5 may be obtained by e-mailing the College of Agriculture’s Resource Center at bixbyd@uwyo.edu, calling the center at (307) 766-2115, or writing to the University of Wyoming, College of Agriculture, Department 3313, 1000 E.
