Four Wyoming youths help guide national 4-H programs

            Four Wyoming youths were among 350 youths and adults from around the country to attend the National 4-H Conference March 25-30 in Washington, D.C.

            They gathered to share ideas and form recommendations in guiding future national 4-H youth development programs nationally and in their communities. The emphasis was on civic engagement, youth-adult partnerships and professional development.

            Wyoming’s youth representatives were Priscilla Jones of Powell, Chance Marshall of Jackson, Tara Rose of Lingle and Sharlet Starck of Lusk.

            They were joined by Rindy West, Campbell County 4-H and youth program associate for the University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service (CES). 4-H is the youth arm of CES, and its state offices are in the UW College of Agriculture.

            “This is one of the best educational opportunities for Wyoming 4-H youth. This year’s delegation was the cream of the crop,” West said. 4-Hers interested in attending had to submit applications to the state 4-H office.

            West and the four youths met with U.S. senators Mike Enzi and Craig Thomas from Wyoming.

            Jones, a member of the Rocks ’n Bugs 4-H Club, is a home-schooled high school senior. She is the daughter of Garnet Schatz and Michael Vandeveegate.

            Marshall is a senior at Jackson Hole High School and is a member of the Teton County Beef, Divine Swine and Junior Leaders 4-H clubs. He is the son of Kevin Marshall and Leah Marshall.

            Rose, a junior at Lingle-Fort Laramie High School, is the daughter of John and Kerri Rose. She is a member of the Bent Barrels Crooked Arrows and Rough Riders 4-H clubs.

            Starck is a senior at Niobrara County High School and a member of the Fairview 4-H Club. Her parents are Greg and Janette Starck.
